Save the date cards can be sent well in advance of the wedding, before formal wedding invitations go out so that guests can keep your wedding date free on their calendar. They typically mention the date and perhaps location of the wedding. A save the date can alternatively be sent together with the invitations, in the form of keepsakes or trinkets, like a drink coaster.
